Biography - Ursula Lawley Fine Artist
Ursula Lawley, BA (Hons) - Fine Artist
Ursula Lawley is a Wiltshire based artist with an eye for colour, movement and imaginative compositions. She draws inspiration from the mystical and ancient Wiltshire landscape, incorporating animals into the rocks and hills in order to produce colourful, exciting paintings, which are primarily Oil on Canvas.
Ursula was born on 2nd July 1980, in Yeovil, Somerset. Her family moved to Wiltshire when she was four years of age, and even at this age, her talents as an artist were apparent. She had, and still has, an affinity with animals and the natural world. In September 1998, at the age of eighteen, Ursula was accepted by Trowbridge College in Wiltshire, where she excelled in a Foundation course in Art and Design, gaining a diploma. From here, she went on to study at Liverpool John Moores University in September 1999, and graduated with Honours in June 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art. Her main influences during this time were Salvador Dali, for his surrealist style and use of illusions and the double image, and Frida Kahlo, for her powerful, thought provoking compositions.
Since then, Ursula has cultivated an interest in primitive and prehistoric art, looking into cave paintings and drawing inspiration from them. Currently, she is working on a project involving considerable research into the spiritual significance of the ancient megalithic monument of Avebury.
In Ursula's words: "I am exploring the link between the ancient site of Avebury and the 'spirit' world; and what it symbolized to the Neolithic people who built it. This concept can be said to affect us all; we just have to be ready to open our minds to new and spiritual realms, and listen to the lessons that the megaliths are trying to teach us. I feel that this is a fascinating and important journey for myself, both in my artistic endeavours, and in learning more about this magnificent and mysterious place."
